Chris, our much loved coach driver, picked us up from Eastwood on a beautiful sunny day to take us to the National Memorial Arboretum at Alrewas.
On our arrival we headed straight for the land train which took our group around the grounds to view some of their 400+ memorials. The 150-acre site is a living, growing tribute to those who have served and continue to serve our country. It was an emotional ride for some as we reflected on lost friends and family members.
The autumnal colours in the trees were stunning. The first trees were planted at the Arboretum in 1997, they were funded using a grant from the National Forest. Many of the trees planted in the woodlands were selected due to their symbolic properties.
Lunch was next on the agenda which had been pre-ordered and was served by the very friendly and patient staff in the restaurant. Nothing was too much trouble for them. After lunch, there was time for a bit of shopping in the museum shop or a walk up to the largest memorial at the Arboretum which is the magnificent Armed Forces Memorial. It is a nationally significant focus for Remembrance and was created to remember and recognise those who have given their lives in the service of the country since the end of the Second World War.
After a slight hiccup with the coach, which meant we were able to enjoy another cuppa and an extra half an hour with our friends, we were once again transported back to Eastwood and all agreed we had enjoyed another wonderful EMC trip.
